πŸ’€ Arrete! C’est ici L’Empire de la morte πŸ’€

There is a hidden, not really romantic place under Paris, what many people don’t even know. Some, after hearing about it would say: never wanna see it. Others may become excited. This world is the realm of Death. Unique and unusual. Called the Catacombs of Paris.

A huge labyrinth under the city of love, rumored to be approximately 280 km long, where you face yourself with the death. There is only one entrance to the public, with a spiral staircase of 130 steps, leading 20 meters below the surface. Here your journey begins.

The history of it, will take us back more than 2000 years in time. This natural resource has been in use since the time of the Romans, and provided construction material for the city’s buildings. During the second half of the 18th century this underworld was transformed into burial places. The ossuary contains the remains of more than 6-7 million people, transferred here between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries to eliminate the city’s overflowing cemeteries and the risk they posed to public health.

Inside the long maze of dark narrow lined with the bones of the dead the temperature is around 14 degrees. You will find not just structures of bones, but old tombs and stone architecture.

To Get There

The place was open to public visitation from 1874. Nowadays it is open from Tuesday till Sunday from 10 am till 8:30 pm, and the price is around 10 euro. The entrance of the catacombs is located in the 14th arrondissement (Denfert-Rochereau Metro Station). The distance of the tour covers a length of 2 km, and lasts about 45 minutes. Access is limited to only a small fraction of the network, and it has been illegal since 1955 to enter the other parts.
